The Now and the Not Yet

We live in the now and the not yet.

Now we do battle with the enemy of our souls and we fight against principalities and powers in high places, but one day the King of Kings will bind our enemy for eternity and the battle will be over – but not yet.

Now the innocent suffer and bad things happen to good people, but one day Jesus will establish His Kingdom forever and ever and all injustice, sorrow, pain, and suffering will end – but not yet.

Now we see through a glass darkly, but one day we will see Him face to face and all confusion, doubt, fear, and anxiety will vanish and Christ will reign supreme – but not yet.

One day God’s Will will be done on the whole earth and every captive will be set free, but until then we raise our weapons, which are not carnal, but are mighty to pulling down strongholds and we fight. We declare the Goodness of God and His Truth until Jesus Returns. This is the now and the not yet.

We declare to all humankind that Jesus is Lord and that He alone has the cure for what destroys the human soul; we declare to the lost that Jesus saves and He rescues us from sin and shame and we work by the Holy Spirit to declare His Kingdom will come—this is the now and the not yet.

There’s an insurrection taking place against God and His Kingdom. There are locations on this earth that the enemy of our souls works hard to kill, steal, and destroy the human race—both geographically and in the hearts of men. We the Body of Christ are in a real-time battle. Child trafficking, pornography, abortion, the selling of deadly substances, the love of money, hatred, violence, killing of the innocent, lying, addictions, selfishness, bondage of every sort – these are the tools of the enemy to keep the human race under his power. Christ has commanded us to fight this present darkness in His Name, not to falsely claim they are God’s will; not to falsely attribute these acts to a Holy God! We are to declare the Kingdom of God and the Good News of Jesus Christ until He comes! We wait for His Return when He will make all things new and He will reign supreme—no more sorrow, or suffering, or darkness, or evil.  This is the now and the not yet.

Because we live in the now and the not yet, we have to understand as Followers of Christ that indeed Jesus rules and reigns, but not every person, nor every dominion recognizes His Authority and bows to that Name – yet. There are multitudes who reject Jesus, reject His Salvation and His Authority, but one day every knee will bow to Him and every person will confess that Jesus is Lord of Lords and King of Kings – but not yet.

This is why allegories such as Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings and Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia resonate so with our hearts. They are a way for us to understand the now and the not yet. They help us grasp a King Who is leading His people into battle against the enemy and we are able to better comprehend His Sovereignty and the rebellion against Him.

Our King Jesus reigns victorious, but many parts of this earth do not acknowledge His Authority – yet. One day God’s Will will cover the whole earth and there will be no more insurrection, rebellion, darkness, or sin – one day, but not yet. And until Jesus Returns and renews all of creation, we work and we fight and we pray and we labor and we declare and we pull down strongholds. This is why Jesus told us to be salt and light.  This is why Jesus taught us to pray, “Thy kingdom come, thy will be done” because we live in the now and the not yet.  This is the work we are to do until He comes. We fight the good fight. We occupy until His Return. We worship God by faith believing that one day He will indeed make all things new and sin and rebellion and unbelief and death and dying will end. This is the now and the not yet – we have hope because we trust Him and believe God’s Word is Truth; we believe this Time will come.

So does God sit on His Throne?  Is God in control as the rightful Sovereign of the universe? Yes, but not all recognize or accept His Authority. Is God in control? He is in control of all those who yield (and continually yield) their hearts and minds to Him and declare Him as their Lord. But until Jesus Returns, God has given the human race free will to choose darkness or light and as long as people choose darkness over His Marvelous Light, there will be evil on this earth and the insurrection will continue.  This is the now and the not yet. Peace.
