The Even Bigger News

Daryl’s flight out of Chicago was cancelled last week and he had to spend the night in the Windy City. I decided not to go to church on Sunday, May 31st, and waited for my man to come home from the road. So, instead of sitting in a pew that Sunday morning I was sitting on my couch watching news programs. During one of the news shows a ticker tape came across the screen announcing the shooting death of George Tiller.

Now, there is so much I want to say here. Where do I start? I guess the first thing I want to say is that I do not believe it is right to take another person’s life. Even if it means saving hundreds of unborn babies. As a follower of Christ I personally do not believe Jesus would condone such an action because the man who shot the gun sent Tiller into Judgment. And yes, I capitalize Judgment here because Tiller has no opportunity, no chance now to repent and change. It’s over.

Secondly, I have to admit that the most horrible thought crossed my mind when I heard the news. I’m despicable. These words crossed my mind, “Good! It’s about time.” Who am I? What a pig am I! It’s not good. It is never good when someone loses his/her life. No matter how bad that person was, no matter how horrible his/her crimes, we are NEVER to rejoice over someone’s death. So, like the Bible says, the heart is deceitful above all things, and it is exceedingly corrupt: who can know it? (Jeremiah 17:9).

My third thought, right after the stupid “good” comment, was what I consider the real headline of Tiller’s death. Lance and I talked about this. I mean, let’s face it. We all knew the guy was a target. He might as well have had a target painted on him. He’d been shot before. His abortion clinic was bombed, not once, but twice. He had threats on his life since the 1980s. The fact that he was shot (for me) was kind of expected. No, the real headline of the day was that he was an usher at his church! That’s the real news.

I mean think about it. Let’s say you’re a pastor. (Lance articulates this better than I, but this is really what went through my mind). You’re leading a middle-sized church in a middle-sized Midwestern town and you’re part of a middle-of-the-road denomination. You’re preaching and one day one of only three late-term abortion doctors in the nation walks into your congregation and starts attending church there regularly. Okay, you say, “Hey. Maybe I can speak some words of life into this guy’s heart. Maybe I can make a difference.” Because, let’s face it. No one supports late-term abortions. That’s why only three doctors in the nation would even perform them. These are the abortions where the baby can sometimes be taken alive within one day of the projected delivery date. I meet a lot of people. A great breadth of people ranging from atheists to evangelicals. From Obama democrats to die hard Republicans. From Communist Party members to libertarians and I ain’t never met nobody who believed that late-term abortions were okay. Nobody.

So, you’re preaching and standing in the pulpit looking out at your flock and BOOM. There’s George Tiller. You might say, “Okay. He’s here. Maybe God has a plan.” That I can understand.

Next, he’s comes to you because he wants to join your church. Uh…errr…well. Okay. It’s hard, but I’ll s-t-r-e-t-c-h my imagination and say I can even understand a pastor letting a notorious late-term abortion doctor join the congregation (and I think the pastor served this man communion, right?)

But come on now. WHEN THIS GUY ASKS IF HE CAN BE AN USHER? A GREETER AT THE DOOR? ONE WHO PASSES OUT THE CHURCH BULLETIN AND IS THE FIRST FACE VISITORS SEE UPON ARRIVAL TO YOUR CHURCH? Seriously? There is no way I can get that. And to me…this is the real headliner: TILLER IS A CHURCH USHER! It boggles my mind. It blows me away. It is beyond any comprehension. It is unbelievable.

I lived in Wichita, Kansas, during the Summer of Mercy. I have driven by that horrible Tiller clinic hundreds of times. And honestly, never once did I drive by that clinic that I didn’t get eerie vibes and creepy chill bumps. It’s a creepy place. Who can deny that? (Again, only one of three MD’s in our entire nation that would perform these late-term, baby-can-survive-outside-of-the-womb abortions!).

Sorry. Back to the pastor thing. Let’s say the conversation between the pastor and Tiller would go like this. “George, you’re pretty high profile, how about we say you can join, but it’s probably better if you aren’t a greeter or an usher. What d’ya say? Can we keep it on the down low?”

Another thing that blows my mind, does anyone remember the BTK Killer? He was a Lutheran in Wichita too–he was a member of his church’s board. In fact, he used the church’s computer to do some creepy stuff and that’s how the police tracked him down. Uh, hey, Lutheran folks in Wichita, you guys might want to rethink your church membership standards! Just a thought.

Think about this, there are 800,000 MDs practicing in the U.S. Of that total only three provided late-term abortions. Those three formed their own little league of sorts. They vacationed together, they met up for long golf weekends, they were buds. Interesting how they hung out with each other, at least to me.

Now, something I have to remind myself of before I end this blog. So whenever I think I’m better than George Tiller I just read James 2 and try to focus…

James 2:10-13 (New Living Translation)

“For the person who keeps all of the laws except one is as guilty as a person who has broken all of God’s laws. For the same God who said, ‘You must not commit adultery,’ also said, ‘You must not murder.’ So if you murder someone but do not commit adultery, you have still broken the law. So whatever you say or whatever you do, remember that you will be judged by the law that sets you free. There will be no mercy for those who have not shown mercy to others. But if you have been merciful, God will be merciful when he judges you.” Peace.
