IT’S MORE THAN JUST A GAMBLE

Had breakfast with a group of Christian women recently, and one just got back from Las Vegas. Christian women. All church goers. More than half the women admitted they go to Las Vegas regularly, and love it! They go there to gamble and to see a show or two.

My Christian sisters talked about the BEST hotels there, names of the BEST theaters, and a plethora of other BEST categories.

It’s a struggle for me when that rumbling in my tummy starts working its way up my throat and into my mouth. I beg myself, “Don’t say! Please don’t say it!”

Oddly, the one lady who’d just returned was complaining that Las Vegas had become so bad that she had to use face masks to cover her grandkids’ eyes just to walk down the street in broad daylight. “We couldn’t even walk down the streets with the kiddos it was so bad.”

Thaaaat’s right. Then she says, “And marijuana was smoked everywhere. There’s pot shops on every corner. People were just out in the open smoking pot. It was shocking. That was my seventh time in Las Vegas, but I haven’t been in five years – it’s really gone downhill.”

There was a slight pause in the conversation. I don’t know these women very well. And sometimes my internal editing device doesn’t work. Without thinking or without hesitation I said in a very church lady voice, “Hmmmm….a place called ‘Sin City’ displaying sin on the streets. What a shocker. That must have been a big surprise. I can hardly believe people were acting immorally in Las Vegas.”

The table grew silent and someone changed the subject. Needless to say, no one asked for my phone number after the breakfast.

I HATE LAS VEGAS!

I hate everything about it and everything it stands for and if you think spending one dollar there is not a problem, and you have a profession of faith in Jesus Christ –  well you are wrong.

Not only is Nevada owned and operated by organized crime (yes, the mob), but they are #1 in our nation for sex trafficking. And though sex with a minor is not legal in Nevada, there are areas of Las Vegas where law enforcement looks the other way for anyone prostituting themselves age 12 and older.

There are also “night clubs” in Las Vegas specifically for kids under the age of 21. A pedophile’s dream.

So, we have Christians spending dollars in a city that provides prostitution, child abuse, human trafficking, gambling, drugs, strip shows, transgender shows, and is one of the US’s largest centers for organized crime. And we’re okay with that?!?

Every dollar you spend (or lose) in Vegas is a dollar you give to organized crime and sex trafficking.

You’re kidding yourself if you say, “I never spend more than $20.” Might as well take that $20 and hand it over to the most violent, evil, lawless and brutal mob in the world. That’s where it ends up anyway. All profits go back into the evil machine of human vice.

Unless you are heading to Las Vegas to do street evangelism and preach the gospel to those held in darkness, PLEASE DO NOT talk to me about your trip to Vegas. If you mistakenly do, get ready for a boat load of stats, reports, and yes, shaming.

Twenty years ago I left women’s ministry because I was exhausted trying to get Christian women to understand what it means to follow Christ; what it means when the Bible calls us the temple of the Holy Ghost; what it means when the Bible says “avoid all appearances of evil.” After three years of teaching hundreds of women in the Kansas City area, I finally just gave up. I’d hear women talking about trips to Vegas, or a girls’ night out trolling the local wine bars, or later finding out that several couples were wife-swapping or addicted to prescription drugs. Twenty years later and I’m trying to be a part of the Christian sisterhood to find things have not changed, but they’ve actually gotten worse. WORSE! It grieves me.

The Cultural Resource Center (CRC) out of Arizona states that recent stats (2020) indicate that nearly 80% of professing Christians gamble at least once a year (and that includes online as well).

Whatever happened to I Peter 1:13-15? “with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at His coming. As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: ‘Be holy, because I am holy.’”

God doesn’t request our holy living – He commands it. Peace.

FYI: Over 5,000 girls under the age of 12 were rescued from the sex industry in Las Vegas in 2019. Later, medical examinations showed that more than half had contracted a STD. THIS is human trafficking. THIS is slavery. Las Vegas is #1 in child sex trafficking and #2 is Kansas City – where I live. I’m asking the Lord HOW DO I GET INVOLVED IN STOPPING THIS? My heart breaks for each and everyone of those girls.

Good morning Teri,
I want you to know that I love your Blogs and share your perspective. I am a single man that finds myself drowning in the nearly overwhelming torrent of noise and inputs from our society. I am just a few years removed from full immersion in this culture and it is constantly screaming at me to return. I’d like to say that the further I get away from my past that the weaker this voice grows, but the reality is that social media and media in general keep it right in front of me almost every day. I am ready to pull the plug on everything internet and run for my life. Thank you for the encouragement that comes from knowing that there remains strong Christian voices calling from the sidelines to come out of her and to be separate.

I agree with you 100%. I’m in the North Dallas area now and it is the same here. Every church I attend has such compromise in all these areas. I went to a ladies meeting where we were to share testimonies. The leader was serving wine and the woman told their testimony while obviously tipsy! I have not found a church where this isn’t the norm! I will always be labeled as ‘legalistic’ when I finally say something…and I have prayed for wisdom when to speak, and how to gently speak truth…(not my instinct)…the last church we attended for almost 2 years, and the pastor szid ‘im not going to tell you drinking is wrong for you, but it is wrong for me…’ Really?? He also compromised on taking a stand so that the #’s would be high…much effort to get people to attend church, but no discipleship! We finally left after we were rold it isn’t loving to be intolerant…with things the bible calls sin!!

btw, I grew up in Kansas City (Lee’s Summit, Pleasant Hill, and then KS side,Olathe, Lenexa area!)

Preach!❤
They didn’t ask for your number but Jesus said ” Well done good and faithful servant.”
It isn’t comfortable, but we should speak truth.
One Christian co-worker friend used to talk about ‘Team Edward’ and finally I challenged to research the books – once she was educated she stopped talking about it.
I felt very uncomfortable because I really respected her in many other ways…..years later thanked me for telling her the truth.

Finally catching up on email this morning and had a chance to read this blog. Would have given anything to be at that breakfast with you. We could have been Dana Carey’s church ladies walking out together. Oh snap! I’ve never been to LV and never had the desire to go, but I had no idea about the organized crime there. Thanks for telling the truth.
